ANGELA SCHMIDT

Angela completed her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at McMaster, where she conducted her fourth-year thesis project under the supervision of Dr. Alison Holloway. Here, she studied the effects of environmental toxicants on placental cell function through first trimester trophoblasts. During this time, she also led a retrospective chart review at the Juravinski Cancer Centre under the supervision of Dr. Oren Levine exploring the predictive ability of tumour biomarkers for thrombotic events in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer.

Angela is currently a first-year MD/PhD student in Dr. Jonathan Schertzer’s lab at McMaster University who is passionate about advancing women’s health research in the field of endocrinology. For her PhD project, she will examine the sex-dependent effects and synergistic potential of postbiotics on inflammation and metabolism, specifically in the context of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Angela’s research is currently funded by a CIHR scholarship.

Outside of the lab, Angela enjoys reading, playing the piano and guitar, going to concerts, weight lifting, and trying out new sports such as golf and kickboxing.
