Joseph Cavallari

Joseph received his BSc in 2011 at McMaster University, gaining a lot of hands-on experience in biology, biochemistry, and chemistry labs during his undergraduate training. He then worked as a laboratory manager in a microbiology lab before deciding to pursue graduate studies in the brand-new research group of Dr Jonathan Schertzer. During his PhD studies he developed protocols for the growing team and he represented the lab around the world at multiple research conferences. His PhD work characterized the novel concept of bacterial ‘postbiotics’ and how they interact with host inflammatory and metabolic systems to alleviate symptoms of type 2 diabetes. This work involved the creation of new mouse strains to study the effects of genes of interest in specific metabolic tissues (liver, fat, etc.)

Outside of the lab Joseph loves to cook and explore the world of wine. He is interested in music, particularly growing his vinyl collection and noodling on his guitar. He also has a useless ability to quote almost anything from The Simpsons and The Office.
