Nicole Barra

Nicole completed her undergraduate degree in the Life Sciences program at the University of Toronto where she specialized in the Human Biology: Health and Disease program. From there, she found her passion for research and decided to pursue graduate studies at McMaster University under the supervision of Dr. Ali Ashkar. Her PhD project involved examining the role of immune factors in regulating adipose tissue. Nicole continued her career in academia by joining Dr. Daniel Hardy’s laboratory at the University of Western Ontario as a postdoctoral fellow. There, her research examined the long-term metabolic consequences of perinatal nicotine exposure in offspring.
Currently, she is a research associate in the laboratory of Dr. Jonathan Schertzer. She is interested in exploring novel ways to continuously and stimutaneously measure metabolites during fasting and postprandial states in various in vivo models. She is also exploring how immune mechanisms promote drug-induced side effects, specifically muscle myopathy with statin usage.

Her hobbies and interests include running after her daughters, playing the piano and playing softball.
